#KoinUntukAustralia to be handed to Oz embassy Monday

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | March 08 2015 | 3:29 PM

Four million rupiah (US$ 308) worth of coins collected during the satirical #KoinUntukAustralia (Coins for Australia) donation campaign will be delivered to the Australian Embassy in Jakarta on Monday.
Prime Minister Tony Abott, the primary target of this campaign, drew the ire of the Indonesian public after he made remarks suggesting that Indonesia was showing a degree of ungratefulness by not pardoning two Australian nationals currently awaiting execution for drug charges even though the Australian government donated a great deal of money following the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.

Abbot's remarks sparked a campaign, hashtagged on twitter as #koinuntukaustralia, #koinuntukabbott and #coinsforaustralia, through which Indonesians gave back the aid money that they received from Australia in the form of coins, perhaps a critique on Abbot's stingy and petty remarks. The campaign spread all the way to Aceh, where the 2004 tsunami hit the hardest.

“Monday at 9 a.m., we will hand in all the coins collected from this campaign to the Australian Embassy. Sunday will be the final day for people to donate their coins,” Pro Indonesia Coalition (KPI)'s action coordinator Rahmat Himran said on Sunday as quoted by kompas.com.

There are reportedly three bags full of coins, some of which came from Aceh. Rahmat added that they are still awaiting on coins delivered from other regions.

The two Australian nationals, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, are currently at Nusakambangan prison island in Central Java awaiting execution after losing their clemency bid. (dyl)
