BEGGARS ARE RAISING, SUPARNI : I AM

The lack of economy capability forces certain people to earn money whatever ways are. It triggers certain people choose as beggar instead of seeking the proper job. 

The existence of beggars currently raise not only in public areas such as market, public street or other public spaces, but it is existing in educational institutions. Nevertheless it does not exist in Suparni, a 50 year-old woman who sincerely sells snacks to fulfil her needs.

“I am not that pity to be a beggar. I am strong enough to sell something” Suparni strongly argued.

The phenomenon of many adult beggars in surrounding of Semarang State University makes people who living in Sekaran Gunungpati feeling disgusting. In the fact, adult women who labelled themselves as unlucky ones are contradictive with their own capability to earn money from the right ways.


“ I am awaring that many of women are lazy to earn money effort fully, but I don’t want to get any pity from people even if selling snacks is not that easy” She added.

 Suparni, who living in Muntal, Gunungpati Semarang must walk approximately 10 Kilometres from her home to Campus area to sell her snacks. She never complains in doing her daily activities. She heart fully does so in order to lighten her family’s burden.

“ I have six children, three of them were married. My husband is getting heart attack, it is hard for him to get a job while I still have three children who still need eat to survive” She cryingly said. 

“People who have enough capability in term of body strength, skill and willingness to earn money are capable enough to earn money from getting job not as beggar, sometimes I feel so sad” She added.

She honestly said that she only gets 10% of total price as the income since the snacks she got from other people. That is why, the income sometimes so little and never enough to fulfil the need. The range price of her snacks is around Rp. 5000 – Rp. 7.500. If it is counted all snacks are sold, she just got Rp. 50.000 each day.

“I must looking for other alternatives in order to get proper life, besides selling snacks in Campus area, I also work in Laundry Centre in  the evening” She added.

The hard life of Suparni is really contradictive with other beggars who most of them are younger than her. Most of the women beggars are 40-50 year-old and dressed so pity. Responding on that phenomenon, Suparni just be grateful for not being as beggar as long as her capability to do something is worthy for her life.

“I never think people who be beggar is bad. I just keep positive thinking. Every single people’s life is different. The keys are just be grateful and never give up” She ended the interview.
